Concepts of abstraction in design between the past and the present
Lecturer, Interior Design and Furniture Department, Faculty of Applied Arts, 6th of October University
Abstract
The Islamic faith is based on the principle of monotheism, and this has been reflected in art and all aspects of life. Islamic creativity stems from the essence of the Islamic faith, represented by oneness in all its meanings and connotations The thought and teachings of Islamic art and its philosophy emerged from the idea of monotheism and abstraction, the secret that lies in the distinct subjectivity of Islamic art. In his artistic works, the Muslim artist tended to reveal the essence of the universe through the philosophy of abstraction and taking the principle of monotheism into account in every artistic work he accomplished. It is expressed in its own style, through deletion, addition, or modification in the structural system of elements. Islamic abstract thought extended to the modernity trends that adopted this thought. It relied on the principle of abstraction and reduction of ideas, reshaping them in architectural and artistic works, and focusing on expressive power through abstract shapes, lines, and colors, such as the trends of geometric abstraction, cubism, organicism, and others. Islamic abstract art has a major and effective role in the development of modern art. The problem of the research study is summed up in asking the following questions: Does the abstract thought of Islamic art have a distinctive role in the modern abstract school? Is there an impact on architecture and interior design? The research study also aims to clarify the nature of abstraction, its patterns, and the different methods of expressing it in design works in Islamic thought and modern trends in design. The research study ends with an analysis of some examples of design work. Research problem; -Did the abstract thought of Islamic art play a distinctive role in the modern abstract school? - Did the abstract school in modern art have an impact on architecture and interior design? Research objective: The research study aims to Emphasie the emergence of the philosophy of abstraction in Islamic thought leading to modern trends in design. Study the patterns and mechanisms of abstract thought in design. Research limitations: The study is limited to researching the trend of abstraction in both Islamic art and the modern abstract school. Methodologyy: -The research study follows the historical, descriptive and analytical methodology of some applied design works. Results : The abstract trend in art and design is a developed phenomenon from ancient Egyptian art and then Islamic art, and it develops in modern design trends. -Islamic art relied on deep thinking and contemplation, in which small parts are integrated in harmony for a lofty goal. This is the philosophy of modern abstraction. -Mechanisms of abstraction in interior design are a means to confirm functional thought. -Abstractionism adopted analytical philosophical thought to link the intellectual and aesthetic concepts in the form of innovative formulations. -Architects and designers were influenced by abstract art and presented design works that meet the functional needs of space users. -The success of the interior designer depends on the extent to which he employs mechanisms that highlight his ability to benefit from abstract thought and not resort to direct simulation in design.
