Abstract
Today, the world is witnessing tremendous technological advancements in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and artificial intelligence, which has changed many concepts and work patterns. It is a comprehensive revolution that is radically reshaping reality in all fields, including interior design. This requires interior designers to develop their capabilities and skills to respond to the changing world and its rapid technological transformations to meet the requirements of the future job market. This raises research questions about the impact of artificial intelligence on the design process and whether it will replace the role of the interior designer. The research aims to identify the nature of artificial intelligence and its impact on the design process, as well as to measure the extent of the impact of artificial intelligence techniques on the future of the design process and the interior designer through a questionnaire prepared for a random sample of designers in the field of interior design. The importance of the research lies in raising awareness among designers about the importance of keeping pace with development and benefiting from modern technologies to improve design efficiency and create a new generation of designers capable of dealing with the developments of the era and employing them in new innovations that serve humanity. The research assumes that artificial intelligence applications contribute effectively to the development of creative abilities and design skills. The research has reached a set of results, most notably that artificial intelligence tools are a means and tool for brainstorming and inspiration that contribute to improving design efficiency and enhancing creative abilities, and are not a substitute for the interior designer. The research recommends the necessity for designers to keep pace with technological developments and to exploit the capabilities and possibilities of artificial intelligence tools and software to improve design efficiency and save time and effort. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is an essential part of the fourth industrial revolution, which is characterized by the expansion of digital technology and rapid developments in various fields such as machine learning, the Internet of Things, and big data analysis. With this development, AI has left its mark on many specialties, including interior design and the design process in general. The design process is one of the most demanding processes that requires a lot of effort, time, and resources, involving many complex steps that require multiple technical and creative skills and expertise to execute. With the development of technology and the emergence of the field of AI, it has become possible to facilitate and streamline the design process. AI relies on machine learning and intelligent data analysis techniques to facilitate the design process and provide effective and fast design solutions to the problems designers face. Through the use of AI, designers can analyze data and generate design models and insights faster and more accurately, saving time and effort in understanding customer requirements and focusing the designer's attention on the creative and technical aspects of the design process. AI has the ability to inspire and enhance the design process, but it must be used ethically to avoid negative effects on human creativity and design ethics. Research problem statement: What is the impact of AI on the design process, and does AI replace the role of the interior designer? Research objectives: The study aims to achieve several objectives, including:
Identify the nature of AI and its impact on the design process. Measure the extent of the impact of AI technologies on the future of the design process and interior designers.
Research significance: The research can contribute to raising awareness among designers about the importance of keeping up with developments and using modern technologies to improve design efficiency and nurture a new generation of designers who can deal with the developments of the era and employ them in new innovations that serve humanity. Research hypotheses: The research assumes that AI applications effectively contribute to developing creative abilities and design skills. Research methodology: The research follows the descriptive analytical methodology by collecting and analyzing information and data to achieve the research objectives and answer the research problem. Research limitations: The time limit of the study is the year 2023, which is the year in which the research was conducted. Results: Through the study's theoretical framework, statistical analysis, and survey results, it was found that:
Artificial intelligence tools are a means and tool for brainstorming that have the ability to inspire and enhance the interior design process. They also contribute to improving the efficiency of the design process and enhancing imaginative and creative abilities, and are not a substitute for the interior designer but rather an assisting tool for them. 87.5% of the research sample designers reported having used artificial intelligence applications in the design process, with more than half of the sample reporting that the "Midjourny" application is the most effective. The reasons for this, according to the statistical proportions of the research sample, are that it offers innovative ideas, ease of inputting data into the program, and multiple options for the same data. More than half of the research sample of designers reported that artificial intelligence applications:
Facilitate and streamline the design process Contribute to saving time, effort, and completing assigned tasks Contribute to developing their design skills and increasing their imaginative abilities Help facilitate the concept and mood board stages of the design Assist in providing more options for customers and bridging the gap between them and the client, ultimately reducing the need for repeated modifications.
More than half of the research sample reported not feeling concerned about the rapid development of artificial intelligence applications in the interior design profession. They believe that these applications will not replace the role of the interior designer and furniture, but instead serve as an assistant tool. More than half of the research sample of designers expressed support for the use of artificial intelligence programs in the design process and integrating them with traditional methods. However, the resulting designs from some artificial intelligence programs require further modifications to become executable.
