Abstract
The family getting a proper accommodation, which provides them with the functional needs and social status and psychological comfort within their physical ability, is one of the main requirements in the modern urban communities, and studies suggest that many of the Saudi Families live in inadequate accommodations to the needs of the family and their numbers in terms space and design.  So the need to rationalize the accommodation units appears so that their elements space achieve high functionality efficiency, and reduce the housing area to the extent that corresponds to the actual living and the functional needs of the family, and converting the unexploited blanks into utilitarian space with positive functions in reducing the accommodation area and raising the utilization efficiency of those blanks with simple designs and easy to execute. This study aims to identify the finding of design solutions to employ vertical plane in the interior space of the accommodation. The problem ofthe study lies in answering the following question: What is the extent of benefit of the vertical plane in the design and furnishing of the internal space of the accommodation? The study relied on the descriptive and analytical approach. The study was applied to a sample of deliberate of (80) families living in an apartment. The researcher prepared the following tools to achieve the objectives of the study and making conclusions: a form including data about the sample accommodation, and data for measuring the benefit from the vertical plane (height) in the design and furnishing of the accommodation. And then statistically analyzing the data and making conclusions. The researcher came to modern solutions in the field of design and furnishing of the accommodation achieving the needs, and go well with the different economic levels. The researcher recommended that the research in finding design alternatives to achieve social needs and functional requirements of the family is necessary, and to avoid extravagant in space and work to reduce the unexploited and lost space, and the use of modern design solutions that contribute to the reduction of housing furnishing costs, and the production of higher quality and lower cost accommodations.
