Abstract
Due to the continuous development of smart materials science in recent times. And since the use of smart materials has become in a wide range of different production and design processes. This research studies smart materials and their applications, in addition to studying emotional design and the role of smart materials in achieving their levels in different product designs that are used in our everyday life. In this work, a brief summary of the concept of each of the smart materials, structure, and systems and their applications in various fields, in addition to the added values resulting from the employment of smart materials in different products. Moreover, an overview of emotional design and its levels, and we may find an attempt to clarify the role and impact of smart materials in achieving these levels and enhancing emotional design scale in different product designs, and then creating a positive user experience. Therefore, the research contributes to providing a study that shows the role and impact of smart materials in achieving the emotional design of products and their relationship to creating a positive user experience. This is done through surveys and questionnaires that are exploited to collect data from users’ perspectives. Research Problem: The research question is would the industrial designer create a positive user experience by employing smart materials in emotional design? The problem of the research lies in the lack of a study of the impact and role of smart materials in achieving emotional design for products. Hence creating a positive user experience for the user. Research Objectives: The research aims to build knowledge about the concept of smart materials and their role in achieving the emotional design of products, and the ability to communicate with the user by achieving his requirements and then access to a positive user experience. Importance of Research: The importance of the research is to study the role and impact of smart materials in achieving emotional design for products, which leads to:• Maximizing the use of smart materials in industrial and product design fields, especially the research topic (emotional design).• Designing more efficient and effective products capable of improving the user experience.• Improving the quality of human life and achieving pleasure by providing an emotional link between the user and the product through smart materials.• Provide designers and researchers of industrial and product design with innovative applications interested in smart materials technology and emotional design and increase their knowledge of the importance of materials as part of the design to create a product that better suits the habits and requirements of the user. Research Methodology: The research follows (Inductive approach - Deductive approach) followed by a qualitative and a quantitative approach, Results: • Smart materials contribute to the product design process in creating products capable of achieving a successful user experience and thus achieving the highest levels of emotional design. • Smart materials, through their unique and distinct properties, improve the user experience and add usage, functional and aesthetic values to the products. • Smart materials have an effective role and impact in achieving emotional design at different levels. • Predict that in the coming years’ smart materials will become an essential component used by designers who develop products and user experiences, ultimately making the end-user experience better.
