Abstract
In the era of digital technology, there is an unprecedented amount of graphic resources. The image stormed all areas of life and the language of the image overwhelmed the language of words, so we lived in a visually oriented society. Thus, today's culture has become visual. Which made the sources of visual knowledge one of the most important requirements for learning in general and learning design in particular. Hence, the research problem appears in the need to identify the visual culture as a knowledge field with its concepts, aspects and skills and try to benefit from this in teaching design. Especially that the sources of knowledge of design students in general are mostly visual, especially in our time. Many students, relying solely on their personal diligence, may not be able to make the desired use of these visual sources. Therefore, the research aims to discover the areas of benefiting from the various aspects of visual culture and their application in design education to increase the knowledge experience and creative capabilities of designers. In the research, the elements of visual culture, including concepts, aspects and skills, were studied. Then, the aspects of benefiting from those elements in the design education process were presented, and on top of those aspects is the guiding model that the researcher reached by making use of the skill of reading optics, which is one of the skills of visual culture. The researcher reached a set of results, the most important of which are: There are many aspects of the link between visual culture in terms of concept, aspects and skills, and teaching design. The visual culture skills help designers interact visually with product shapes and derive information from them, which increases their knowledge experiences and develops their creativity, as well as developing ideas and suggested concepts for designing new products or to address existing product problems. A guiding model was also found that would assist the design studies to systematically analyze product images to extract information from them by making use of optometry reading skills.
